NAIFA in the News

NAIFA featured in more than 17 news articles and media placements during the month of June. Big topics included NAIFA’s advocacy on the SEC’s Regulation BI and the SECURE Act (see, particularly, the CNBC article also picked up by Yahoo! Finance, MSN.com and other major outlets, which features quotes from an interview with NAIFA AVP of Government Relations Judi Carsrud). Outlets including ThinkAdvisor, Insurance Forums, and AdvisorNews feature lengthy quotes on the SECURE Act by NAIFA CEO Kevin Mayeux. 

Take Action on Retirement Security

One of NAIFA’s greatest strengths is our phenomenal grassroots influence and today we need ALL of you to TAKE ACTION!  This will only take two minutes - NAIFA is very thoughtful when launching an Action Alert as we appreciate the many demands upon your time, so know that we ask for your involvement today because it is critically important for the Senate to pass the SECURE Act before the August recess. 

The SECURE Act will make it much easier for employers to sponsor retirement plans and include annuities in the investment line-up. Among other retirement enhancements, it provides tax credits, expands allowable 529 expenses, and fixes a tax glitch that significantly increased the taxes on Gold Star families.

Just a week after many of you participated in the Congressional Conference, the House did as you asked and passed this legislation with an impressive bipartisan vote of 417-3.  The Senate immediately put in a request to pass the legislation by unanimous consent.  This procedure allows senators to reject the request and have their concerns addressed. Currently, Senators Cruz (R-TX), Lee (R-UT) and Toomey (R-PA) have put a “hold” on the vote for passage. None of their concerns are related to retirement provisions. If the Senate amends SECURE to address their issues, the legislation will return to the House for another vote (and would likely fail).

The most viable path to enactment is for the Senate to pass SECURE as soon as possible. If SECURE doesn’t pass the Senate before the August recess, we will have missed our only window.  

 Please TAKE ACTION TODAY by doing the following – 

1) Ask your Senators to support and encourage their colleagues to pass this legislation.

2) Thank and request your Representative’s assistance in urging the Senate to Act.

Members of Congress may be in their district offices for the July 4th recess so, in addition to sending this message, you might have a good opportunity to meet in-district as well.

NAIFA Certification Commission Receives Accreditation for LACP Certification 

The National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) has accredited the NAIFA Certification Commission’s Life and Annuity Certified Professional (LACP) certification for a five-year period, effective May 13, 2019. The LACP certification is now officially listed on the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) professional designations database, one of only ten accredited designations of the hundreds listed with FINRA.

Companies that have approved LACP include Country Financial, SagePoint Financial, Woodbury Financial, Royal Alliance, FSC Securities, Cambridge Investment Research and one very big company that we will unveil in August.
