Grassroots Engagement Monthly Calendar

As a Grassroots Chair, reference this monthly checklist to keep track of key benchmarks throughout the year.

JANUARY

  • Reach out to your grassroots committee and welcome them to the new year.

  • Update your chapter’s contact list.

  • Review your political involvement plan.

    • Schedule of events and Legislative Days

    • Recruit new state and federal grassroots contacts

    • District meetings, site visits, and legislator invitations to chapter meetings

    • GOTV efforts

    • Sharing GovAlerts and ways to get involved

  • Meet with your committee to review the political involvement plan.

  • Prepare for Congress to reconvene.

  • Review state legislative session schedule.

FEBRUARY/MARCH

  • Meet with Government Relations chair on important legislative issues and plan for appropriate grassroots/grasstops responses.

  • Prepare your association contacts to respond to NAIFA’s and your state association’s GovAlerts.

  • Encourage NAIFA members to register for NAIFA’s May Congressional Conference in Washington, DC.

  • Recruit new state and federal grassroots contacts.

APRIL

  • Continue to build your contact system and encourage political involvement.

  • Contact your state’s Federal Coordinator and ask for an activities update – site visits, in-district meetings, etc.

  • Encourage NAIFA members to register for NAIFA’s May Congressional Conference in Washington, DC.

  • Recruit new state and federal grassroots contacts.

MAY/JUNE

  • Attend NAIFA’s Congressional Conference in Washington, DC.

  • Coordinate with participants of the Congressional Conference and send a follow-up to offices.

  • Encourage committee members to attend the ALC and/or LSP for training.

  • Recruit new state and federal grassroots contacts.

  • Download a copy of your state’s federal grassroots contact report from the Advocacy Action Center.

  • Plan for August in-district meetings and site visits in coordination with grassroots contacts.

    • Meet with your committee to identify meeting leads and grassroots contacts available for legislator meetings in August.

JULY

  • Plan for August in-district meetings and site visits in coordination with grassroots contacts.

    • Meet with your committee to finalize plans and ensure there are meetings scheduled with legislators for August recess.

  • Encourage participation in the grassroots engagement course or schedule an advocacy training webinar with NAIFA staff.

  • Recruit new state and federal grassroots contacts.

  • Plan the state chapter APC or LSP workshop.

  • Meet with the Government Relations chair and IFAPAC chair to discuss the coordination of activities.

AUGUST

  • Submit a budget and your grassroots activity plan to your association Board.

  • Review the grassroots contacts report and identify areas that need work (i.e., key contact gaps, legislator engagement)

  • Recruit new state and federal grassroots contacts.

SEPTEMBER

  • Prepare for Congress to return from recess.

  • Provide an update to your National Grassroots Committee liaison on August in-district activities.

  • Introduce yourself to the grassroots contacts in your area if you were recently appointed to your role.

    • Work with them to make sure names, addresses, phone numbers, fax numbers, and email addresses are up to date. Send any changes to advocacy@naifa.org.

    • Recruit new state and federal grassroots contacts.

OCTOBER

  • Encourage NAIFA members to become involved in voter registration drives and election campaigns.

  • Send out key election date messages in your state.

  • Hold a grassroots and voter education meeting with the general membership.

  • Recruit new state and federal grassroots contacts.

NOVEMBER

  • Send an email the day before Election Day encouraging members to vote.

  • Provide an update to your National Grassroots Committee liaison on any changes to your grassroots contacts.

  • Recruit new state and federal grassroots contacts.

DECEMBER

  • Host a year-end chapter meeting to evaluate the activities from the year and prepare a final report for your Board. Consider suggestions and growth opportunities for next year.

  • Review new members of Congress and begin to identify grassroots contacts that have relationships with incoming freshmen members.

  • Review your lobbyist contract to ensure both parties met all requirements.

  • Recruit new state and federal grassroots contacts.
